After a last minute aborted launch on Saturday and a tense three day wait, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket finally lifted off this morning.
The Dragon capsule, which was riding on top of the rocket, is packed with supplies and should rendez-vous with the International Space Station later this week - the first private craft to do so.
If all goes to plan, by the time you wake up on Saturday (19th May) SpaceX will have successfully launched it’s Falcon 9 rocket on the first mission by a private commercial company to resupply the International Space Station, potentially marking the start of a whole new era for humans in space. Here is Elon Musk, SpaceX’s founder, showing off some of their hardware.
The launch is planned for 04:55 EDT (09:55 BST - live webcast at http://www.spacex.com/) and should begin manoeuvres to meet up with the ISS on Monday and Tuesday next week.

Can happiness be bought? To find out, author Benjamin Wallace sampled the world’s most expensive products, including a bottle of 1947 Chateau Cheval Blanc, 8 ounces of Kobe beef and the fabled (notorious) Kopi Luwak coffee.
Red Bull Stratos mission will take renowned athlete Felix Baumgartner to at least 120,000 feet above the earth, to the very edge of Space.
From there, he will attempt a stratospheric free fall jump - the longest in the history of man - and hopefully will become the first human to break the speed of sound with his own body.
This is a mission to overcome limits which have existed for almost fifty years, ever since the heroic achievement of the young US Air Force test pilot, Joe Kittinger, with his 1960 Excelsior mission.
Red Bull Stratos will attempt to make history and deliver valuable learnings for medical and scientific advancement that will aid the exploration of space in future years.
Some people collect stamps. Wolfram Research co-founder and author Theo Gray collects elements. Step into his office, and you’ll see a silicon disc engraved with Homer Simpson, a jar of mercury, uranium shells and thousands of other chemical artifacts. But his real DIY masterpiece is the world’s first “periodic table table.” Within this masterfully constructed table-top lay samples of nearly every element known to man, minus the super-radioactive ones.
